The District office is located in the same building as the USDA – NRCS and FSA offices. This provides a one stop shopping center for the farmers of Washington County and enables our employees to work closely with the USDA agencies.

Washington County, according to the USDA National Statistics Service (2022), is ranked first in number of beef cattle and beef operations, with a remarkable 611 beef cattle farms and 10,873 head of beef cattle. Sheep production ranks second in Pennsylvania with 135 farms and 4,491 head of sheep. Rotational grazing patterns also rank an astonishing second in Pennsylvania. Washington County boasts a tremendous horse industry, both pleasure and professional, ranking third in the Commonwealth for the total number of horses and ponies.

Division Services

Our office is housed in the same building as the USDA agricultural offices, making it easy for local farmers to access multiple resources in one place. This setup also allows our team to collaborate closely with USDA staff.

Washington County ranks among the top in Pennsylvania agriculture — 1st in sheep, wool, and beef cattle; 2nd in forage production, hay acreage, and sheep farms; and 3rd in goat farms, mule/donkey farms, and total horses and ponies. The region is home to a strong mix of livestock, forage, and equine industries.

Aerator Rental

This aerator was purchased by the Washington County Conservation District to encourage and promote better infiltration in pastures and cropland. Aerators benefit crops by reducing soil compaction, which allows roots to grow deeper for stronger plants, and by creating channels for better air, water, and nutrient absorption, leading to improved growth, higher yields, and increased drought resilience, while also preventing runoff and boosting beneficial microbial activity for overall soil health
