Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about conservation, permitting, or our programs? Check out our frequently asked questions below for quick answers to some of the topics we’re asked about most. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, feel free to contact our office — we’re here to help!

What does the Conservation District do?

The Washington County Conservation District works to protect and conserve natural resources through education, technical assistance, and regulatory support. Our focus areas include agriculture, water quality, erosion control, stormwater management, and environmental outreach.

Do I need a permit for my construction or earth disturbance project?

You may need an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan or a Chapter 102/NPDES permit depending on the size and scope of your project. Contact our office early in your planning process to find out what’s required.

Can the Conservation District help with issues on my farm?

Yes! We offer technical assistance for farmers, including help with nutrient management, manure storage, conservation planning, and funding opportunities for best management practices (BMPs).

How can I schedule a school program or presentation?

We offer educational programs for schools, youth groups, and community events. Visit our Education page or contact our office to schedule a visit or request materials.

What is a watershed, and why does it matter?

A watershed is an area of land where all water drains into a common body of water. Protecting watersheds helps improve water quality, reduce flooding, and preserve local ecosystems.

Can I apply for funding through the Dirt, Gravel & Low Volume Roads Program?

Municipalities can apply for funding to improve rural roads that impact water quality. Visit the DGLVR Program page for eligibility details and application information.
