Display Opportunities: The District prepares and maintains informational displays for environmental outreach at various events throughout the year. These events include Washington County Agricultural Days, the Washington County Children’s Groundwater Festival, the Washington County Fair, the Washington County Sportsmen’s Show, high school Career Days, and the Ohio River Watershed Celebration. Programs and Presentations: Staff members continually work to promote environmental education by instructing at various programs for schools, farm organizations, municipalities, civic groups, and scout organizations. Some of the programs instructed at in 2008 include the Washington County Children’s Groundwater Festival, South Fayette Elementary Summer Day Camp, Washington & Jefferson College programs, Bethel Park/Canon McMillan High School Career Day, Avella Area High School, and the Washington County Envirothon. Several thousand individuals from both inside and outside the county were reached through displays, programs, and presentations. A resource library of environmental information is also maintained in both district offices for the public. Washington County Envirothon:The District holds an annual environmental competition for county high school students. The Watershed Specialist coordinates the event, and the entire District staff helps ensure that things run smoothly on the days of the Study Session and Competition. The Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen's Club graciously allows us the use of their facilities for the event, and volunteers from state and local agencies instruct the testing stations. Students form teams of five and rotate around to five different stations: Aquatics, Forestry, Wildlife, Soils, and Current Issue. At each station the teams are tested on the subject, and the team with the highest overall score will go on to the Pennsylvania State Envirothon as the representative team from Washington County. Special thanks to the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen's Club and Consol Energy for sponsoring the event. 2009
